RALEIGH – Self-advocates release a Credo for Meaningful Relationships through the North Carolina Relationships Initiative (NCRI). The Credo describes what people with disabilities need to experience healthy relationships with others besides family and paid staff and to live full lives in the community. The Credo can be found on the NCRI webpage at www.hsri.org/project/north-carolina-relationships-initiative/overview/ncri-materials.
Self-advocates in Asheville, Greensboro, Monroe and Raleigh worked together to write the Credo to address barriers that get in the way of people with disabilities experiencing healthy social and emotional relationships. In the Credo, they assert that people with disabilities should be treated with respect and included in community life like any other person without disabilities. They describe what they need to live the lives they choose and experience love, friendship and a full social way of life in the community.
They will use the Credo to educate families, direct support staff, provider agencies, teachers and others. They hope this will lead to changes in policies and practices in education and disability services that will increase opportunities for people with disabilities to develop the healthy social and emotional relationships they choose.
The NCRI project is funded by the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities and implemented by the Human Services Research Institute, a national non-profit focused on disability policy. The purpose of the NCRI project was to identify barriers to social and emotional relationships and develop policy recommendations to address them.
